How Indie Games Became the New Underground Art Movement
How Indie Games Became the New Underground Art Movement
Costa Rica has been building a game development culture for over a decade. The world is only just beginning to notice. This is the story — and the scoreboard.
The story of indie games in Costa Rica didn't begin with T3AMPO Studio. It began more than a decade earlier — with a generation of developers who built a scene from nothing, before anyone was watching. What follows is that story, the record that proves it, and the case for why the institutions responsible for Costa Rica's creative economy need to act on what that record shows.
Researcher María Lourdes Cortez has documented the arc of game development in Costa Rica in waves — successive generations of studios and developers that built on each other's foundations. The first university game showcase dates to around 2013. Studios like Fair Play Labs were pioneering the local scene even before that. What has accumulated since is extraordinary. What has not accumulated at the same pace is the institutional support this community deserves.
Primera ola · ~2010–2016 — The Pioneers. Early studios and university showcases. Fair Play Labs and peers build the foundation before anyone is watching.
Segunda ola · ~2016–2021 — The Builders. The ecosystem deepens. Game jams multiply. Studios begin reaching international platforms and competitions.
Tercera ola · ~2021–presente — The Exporters. T3AMPO and peers. Original IP. International awards. Games as exportable culture, education, and entrepreneurship.
T3AMPO sits at the threshold of the second and third wave — deeply aware of the debt we owe to the studios that came before us. This article is as much about them as it is about us. Because the argument we are making — that this ecosystem deserves more — is only credible because of everything they already proved.
What games can be — a wider frame
The conversation about games in Costa Rica has too often been confined to entertainment. That framing has done enormous damage to an ecosystem demonstrating, for over a decade, that games are something far more expansive.
Games are Art (visual, sound, narrative craft), Education (learning tools, engagement design), Storytelling (interactive narrative, cultural memory), Entrepreneurship (original IP, exportable services), Culture (identity, heritage, representation), and Innovation (gamification, VR, AI, simulation).

Five consecutive years. Nine or more studios. Sixteen or more awards. A best-in-Latin-America title claimed multiple times. A second-place finish at the world level. This is not a scene that is trying to prove itself. This is a scene that has already proven itself — and is waiting for the infrastructure to catch up.
Building the scene — not just the studio
T3AMPO's contribution to the Costa Rican ecosystem goes beyond the games. Starting in 2024, the studio began producing and sponsoring EXPOVIT — a game development event that brings international speakers to Costa Rica and creates the kind of professional infrastructure the scene has always needed but rarely had.
EXPOVIT 2024 · A landmark moment. Ian Rochlin — founder of Game Jam Plus, the competition that first put Costa Rican game development on the international map — traveled to Costa Rica as an international guest speaker for EXPOVIT 2024. He didn't stay in San José. He accompanied the T3AMPO team to the Municipality of Limón — to sit with local government and make the case for game development opportunities in the Caribbean province. At that point, T3AMPO had raised $32,000 in total funding through AUGE-UCR/SBD incubation and acceleration. The man who built the competition where that conviction was first validated was in Limón, making the argument alongside them.
EXPOVIT · International speakers from: Brasil, Portugal, México, USA, Japan.
T3AMPO also produced the Game Jam Plus Documentary in 2024 and 2025 — capturing the story of the regional community for audiences who weren't in those rooms. And has actively supported the formation of new studios like Solar Blaze, treating the ecosystem's growth as a shared project rather than a competitive threat.

"The proof exists. What's missing is the investment."
The case — direct and specific
The Costa Rican game development ecosystem has been validated. Not once — consistently, over five years, across multiple studios, at the world level. The validation has been done. What the ecosystem has not received — in proportion to what it has proven — is the infrastructure, funding, and strategic recognition that would allow it to grow from a collection of talented individual studios into a genuine creative industry.
T3AMPO Studio is one studio in one city at one moment in a much longer arc. We are grateful to every studio and developer who built the foundation we stand on. We are committed to leaving something equally solid for the studios still forming — in Limón, in San José, in Guápiles, in Talamanca, in every corner of a country that has already proven, beyond any reasonable doubt, that it knows how to make games the world wants to play.
